HIFU Prostate Cancer Treatment

Is HIFU a Safe Prostate Cancer Treatment?
Regrettably, the damage caused by heat to cancer cells is indistinguishable from that inflicted upon surrounding normal cells. The absence of a therapeutic ratio with this modality increases the risk of heat-induced damage to adjacent areas around the prostate, such as the rectum, urethra, and nerves.
The outcomes associated with HIFU Prostate Cancer Treatment are notably unsatisfactory. Consequently, only a few papers are accessible, with a small patient cohort and an insufficient follow-up duration of less than ten years. A recent European study published in 2008 revealed that the 5-year success rate in France was merely 30% with HIFU (Misrai, 2008).
Among the most extensive HIFU Prostate Cancer Treatment series, a mere 59% disease-free survival was observed at seven years for patients in the early stages (Blana, European Urology 2008). These results notably fall below the published outcomes from more extensive series involving radiation (which report 94-98% success rates for similar patients).
The documented toxicity associated with HIFU Prostate Cancer Treatment in these publications is also significant, with increased incontinence and urethral strictures (Poissonnier, European Urology 2007).
Salvage Therapy
Our expertise often leads to success in cases where others have encountered difficulties. We have effectively treated men who have experienced recurrences following prior proton therapy, surgery, cryotherapy, and HIFU. Performing salvage therapy demands exceptional expertise to ensure a safe and effective procedure.
Terk Oncology’s Florida Center for Prostate Care boasts the most extensive published series globally for performing salvage prostate seed implants.
